Foreigners who want to stay in Vietnam need to apply for a long-term temporary residence card in Vietnam. The temporary residence card for foreigners acts as a proof of visa exemption upon entry and exit during the validity of the card. Its value lasts from 1 to 3 years. Below are the basic provisions and procedures for applying for a temporary residence card for foreigners provided by Viet Luat:

This standard applies to both overseas Vietnamese (Viet Kieu) holding foreign passports.

Foreigners (NNNs) who have temporarily resided for 1 year or more are granted a temporary residence card by a competent immigration management agency under the Ministry of Public Security. Temporary residence cards are valid for 1 to 3 years. Holders of temporary residence cards are exempted from visas upon exiting or entering the country within the validity of the card” (Clause 3, Article 15 of the Ordinance on Entry, Exit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam).

1. Procedures for granting a new temporary residence card:

• 01 photocopy of valid passport and visa (bring the original for comparison).
• 01 copy or photocopy (bring the original for comparison) of the legal entity file of the guarantor agency, organization or enterprise applying for a temporary residence card, depending on the specific case, submit the following documents: First certificate private; Certificate of business registration; License to establish Representative Office; Company branch (including operation notice); Certificate of seal sample registration; 01 photocopy of the work permit (bring the original for comparison), in case a work permit is required.
• 3 photos (3×4, white background) taken within 6 months.
  Certificate of temporary residence in the ward, commune, town where the applicant for the temporary residence card.
  The accompanying relatives must submit documents proving their relationship such as birth certificate, marriage registration certificate, family book, etc.
